Pretty good stuff, I’ve always thought.

During the Vietnam war it was in the spirit of 1776 to celebrate July 4 by taking to the streets in support of the revolutionary struggle of the Vietnamese people.

Now it’s in the spirit of 1776, to demand that the US and its allies stay in Afghanistan, that they continue to back the revolution in Libya, and that they get serious about outlawing dictatorship everywhere.

    I find it funny that it says “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,” yet they maintained legal slave owning and Jefferson owned his own slaves?? That’s a bit messed up!

    Here’s what Frederick Douglass had to say

    Thanks for your comment Shannon – and welcome to the contradictoriness of history! It’s like that. You aren’t gonna find any real examples of historical upheavals leading to human progress, in which the victors were 100% “good”, or driven by clear and pure motives. Nevertheless we take sides. And we celebrate the courage, cleverness – and ..um ..cheek, rebellious spirit, of those who did it.

    You are quite right about the hypocrisy contained in the words

    And it took another 90 years to get rid of slavery in the USA! The American Civil War should really be seen as a continuation of the revolution, I think. Ninety years is a bloody long time, but I think they are inextricably linked.

    Those words are still grand words however, no matter how much they contradicted reality. They changed the way people thought (as well as being a reflection of the ways in which people were already changing). The hypocrisy was writ large, and that in itself was a powerful thing.

    It’s interesting to look at how people like Washington and Jefferson both supported and opposed slavery. They most certainly took part in it, but neither of them advocated it.

    In his Notes on the State of Virginia Jefferson said this:

    There must doubtless be an unhappy influence on the manners of our people produced by the existence of slavery among us. The whole commerce between master and slave is a perpetual exercise of the most boisterous passions, the most unremitting despotism on the one part, and degrading submissions on the other.

    Our children see this, and learn to imitate it; for man is an imitative animal. This quality is the germ of all education in him. From his cradle to his grave he is learning to do what he sees others do. If a parent could find no motive either in his philanthropy or his self-love, for restraining the intemperance of passion towards his slave, it should always be a sufficient one that his child is present. But generally it is not sufficient. The parent storms, the child looks on, catches the lineaments of wrath, puts on the same airs in the circle of smaller slaves, gives a loose to his worst of passions, and thus nursed, educated, and daily exercised in tyranny, cannot but be stamped by it with odious peculiarities.

    The man must be a prodigy who can retain his manners and morals undepraved by such circumstances. And with what execration should the statesman be loaded, who permitting one half the citizens thus to trample on the rights of the other, transforms those into despots, and these into enemies, destroys the morals of the one part, and the amor patriae of the other. For if a slave can have a country in this world, it must be any other in preference to that in which he is born to live and labour for another: in which he must lock up the faculties of his nature, contribute as far as depends on his individual endeavours to the evanishment of the human race, or entail his own miserable condition on the endless generations proceeding from him.

    With the morals of the people, their industry also is destroyed. For in a warm climate, no man will labour for himself who
    can make another labour for him. This is so true, that of the proprietors of slaves a very small proportion indeed are ever seen to labour. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with his wrath? Indeed I tremble for my country when reflect that God is just: that his justice cannot sleep for ever: that considering numbers, nature and natural means only, a revolution of the wheel of fortune, an exchange of situation, is among possible events: that it may become probable by supernatural interference! The Almighty has no attribute which can take side with us in such a contest. — But it is impossible to be temperate and to pursue this subject through the various considerations of policy, of morals, of history natural and civil. We must be contented to hope they will force their way into every one’s mind.

    I think a change already perceptible, since the origin of the present revolution. The spirit of the master is abating, that of the slave rising from the dust, his condition mollifying, the way I hope preparing, under the auspices of heaven, for a total emancipation, and that this is disposed, in the order of events, to be with the consent of the masters, rather than by their extirpation.

    “From the commencement of the titanic American strife the workingmen of Europe felt instinctively that the star-spangled banner carried the destiny of their class. The contest for the territories which opened the dire epopee, was it not to decide whether the virgin soil of immense tracts should be wedded to the labor of the emigrant or prostituted by the tramp of the slave driver?…

    “The workingmen of Europe feel sure that, as the American War of Independence initiated a new era of ascendancy for the middle class, so the American Antislavery War will do for the working classes. They consider it an earnest of the epoch to come that it fell to the lot of Abraham Lincoln, the single-minded son of the working class, to lead his country through the matchless struggle for the rescue of an enchained race and the reconstruction of a social world”.

    As for dalec’s list, I can only say (for the umpteenth time at this site): no wonder Bush jr and Rice declared in 2003/2004 that the US foreign policy establishment had got it wrong for so many decades! Yet dalec is to their right politically, in that he opposed the US led Coalition’s overthrow of fascism in Iraq and the establishment of parliamentary democracy there and, now, surprise! surprise!, he would leave the Libyan people to a fate similar to that which would have eventuated in Iraq had his mob won the day with their “All foreign forces out” line.

    Oh well, at least the French are supplying weapons to the Libyan rebels, which is much preferable to their previous policy of selling them to the Gaddafi regime. And meanwhile the No-Fly-Zone – yes, that invasion of Libya – continues but is clearly not enough.

    Had concerted international military action been taken from the moment Gaddafi’s regime first straffed the rebels, as advocated here (No Fly Zone), the regime would almost certainly have been overthrown by now and the Lybian people placed in a position to build their own democracy.
