A zero carbon Australia: plan or pipe-dream?
This issue will be debated at the next The Monthly Argument
Matthew Wright (Beyond Zero Emissions) will present the Zero Carbon Stationary Energy Plan
Following this Matthew and Arthur Dent (formerly know as Albert Langer) will debate it.
When: Thursday March 10, 2011 at 6:30pm for 7:00pm start
Where: The Dan O’Connell Hotel, 225 Canning Street, Carlton
Reality Check contains a link to and critical discussion about a recent report issued by the Australian government on its projected carbon dioxide emissions compared to various targets for emissions reductions.
According to Pielke jnr if Australia builds 56 nuclear power plants or 3,333 Solar Thermal Power Plant by 2020 then we might be able to meet the desired target. In other words, Gillard’s carbon tax is an expensive waste of time, whose only real purpose is to shore up support from The Greens.
There are three threads at Brave New Climate devoted to analysis and critique of the Zero Carbon Australia report:
BNC community analysis of the Zero Carbon Australia 2020 Report (July 2010)
‘Zero Carbon Australia – Stationary Energy Plan’ – Critique (August 2010)
Another ZCA 2020 Critique – will they respond? (September 2010)
Rundle is telling very strange untruths about us at crikey and LP

He is in exactly the same fix as Steve (and I bet his mate Sparrow is as well) but they haven’t had it explained to them yet!
My comment is held up in spaminator. Somebody might like to point out that Rundle is way out off his mark.
woops wrong thread obviously!

NTD’s Lee Hall sits down with Michael Kelly, professor emeritus of technology at the University of Cambridge. Kelly was a government scientist when the Climate Change Act launched in 2008, and has been researching the reduction of carbon in Britain since then. He wrote to Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Milliband to say that the Net Zero targets are an engineering fantasy—because the costs are enormously prohibitive and the workforce needed is not available. He is calling for open debate on these issues and says engineering’s professional bodies are not acting responsibly in their silence.

Former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce claims Australia’s net zero push is “merely a virtue statement”.
“Let’s get to the reality,” Mr Joyce said.
“Even if you believe … everything about how they can change the temperature of the globe, well, they cannot do it unless everybody participates, and they are not participating.”

Has the fight started?
Shadow Minister for Home Affairs Andrew Hastie says there’s massive hypocrisy at the heart of the net-zero economy.
“There’s massive hypocrisy at the heart of the net-zero economy,” Mr Hastie told Sky News host Peta Credlin.
“The world’s three largest emitters, China, India, and the USA, are pretty much walking away from net-zero.
“So, the hypocrisy is this, whilst we’re denying Australians our own abundant fuels for power, we’re sending them to China and India, particularly, who are actually growing their emissions.”
