Pretty good stuff, I’ve always thought.
During the Vietnam war it was in the spirit of 1776 to celebrate July 4 by taking to the streets in support of the revolutionary struggle of the Vietnamese people.
Now it’s in the spirit of 1776, to demand that the US and its allies stay in Afghanistan, that they continue to back the revolution in Libya, and that they get serious about outlawing dictatorship everywhere.

Thanks for your comment Shannon – and welcome to the contradictoriness of history! It’s like that. You aren’t gonna find any real examples of historical upheavals leading to human progress, in which the victors were 100% “good”, or driven by clear and pure motives. Nevertheless we take sides. And we celebrate the courage, cleverness – and ..um ..cheek, rebellious spirit, of those who did it.
You are quite right about the hypocrisy contained in the words
And it took another 90 years to get rid of slavery in the USA! The American Civil War should really be seen as a continuation of the revolution, I think. Ninety years is a bloody long time, but I think they are inextricably linked.
Those words are still grand words however, no matter how much they contradicted reality. They changed the way people thought (as well as being a reflection of the ways in which people were already changing). The hypocrisy was writ large, and that in itself was a powerful thing.
It’s interesting to look at how people like Washington and Jefferson both supported and opposed slavery. They most certainly took part in it, but neither of them advocated it.
In his Notes on the State of Virginia Jefferson said this:

As for dalec’s list, I can only say (for the umpteenth time at this site): no wonder Bush jr and Rice declared in 2003/2004 that the US foreign policy establishment had got it wrong for so many decades! Yet dalec is to their right politically, in that he opposed the US led Coalition’s overthrow of fascism in Iraq and the establishment of parliamentary democracy there and, now, surprise! surprise!, he would leave the Libyan people to a fate similar to that which would have eventuated in Iraq had his mob won the day with their “All foreign forces out” line.
Oh well, at least the French are supplying weapons to the Libyan rebels, which is much preferable to their previous policy of selling them to the Gaddafi regime. And meanwhile the No-Fly-Zone – yes, that invasion of Libya – continues but is clearly not enough.
Had concerted international military action been taken from the moment Gaddafi’s regime first straffed the rebels, as advocated here (No Fly Zone), the regime would almost certainly have been overthrown by now and the Lybian people placed in a position to build their own democracy.
